Physical DescriptionColorless non-lead glass; blown, engraved. Large cylindrical bowl with rounded base; engraved decoration, including a bust- length portrait of a man in armor, wearing a full wig, within a foliate wreath, inscribed in a band below "JOSEPHUS I. REX ROM:" and in an oval above, supported by two putti, "ReX tIbILanDaVIo generosabIs IutVIIt arMa/ReX fVerIt soter VULtpater esse+IbI"; on the reverse, a plan of a fortified city, within star-shaped walls and moats, with assulting troops in groups firing cannon at the city from the periphery at the bottom, and with tent camps at either side at the top; elaborately knopped stem, with a large merese above a squat baluster, three disks, an exaggerated hollow inverted baluster with ball knop, on an angular disk, and a squat baluster; silvered copper foot attached to the lower knop with rounded lappets; the foot with knurled ring at the top, sloping to a domed foot, with repousse foliate swags on the top; molded, flared foot rim; rough pontil mark inside the bowl.
