Physical DescriptionColorless; decanter blown into mold; wheel-engraved, ground and polished; stopper ground and polished. (a) Decanter: square. Narrow flange rim with lip ground and polished; short cylindrical neck; tall, conical shoulder with slightly bulging profile; vertical wall; plain, ground and polished base with concavity at center. Unpolished wheel-engraved decoration on three sides of shoulder and wall: clockwise, (1) on wall only, at top right, head of man, bald, with prominent right ear, clean-shaven, facing half-right, incomplete on right side; at bottom left, his left upper arm, reaching out to viewer's left; (2) on shoulder and wall, naked woman kneeling to viewer's right, head shown in profile facing left, torso shown frontally with left arm hanging down and bent inward behind body and right arm hanging down with forearm partly obscured by hip and hand with fingers slightly bent; (3) on upper wall, vertical cartouche containing artist's initials "fh" above date "81"; (4) plain. (b) Stopper. Knop "onion-shaped" (i.e. almost spherical but with slight projection at top); narrow stem; slightly tapering stopper with flat bottom.
