Interpretive Notes
Ludwig Schaffrath is widely respected as a designer of stained glass. He has had a prolific career in Germany (and, later, in Europe, England, the United States, and Japan) spanning 50 years. Unlike other German stained glass designers, such as Jochem Poensgen, Schaffrath uses colors that are very restrained, almost monochromatic. His work in stained glass, which relies on the dynamic use of lead lines, is characterized by expressive abstract compositions.
Physical DescriptionColorless, shades of transparent blue, blue-green and gray non-lead glasses; cut, assembled, leaded. Vertical rectangular panel in geometric grid pattern, with heavy straight lead lines: upper section comprised of various sized colorless sections, some beveled or molded in pyramidal relief; mid-section of shades of flat blue-green punctuated by a horizontal band of small blue jewels; blue-green surrounds large square grid area of small colorless prisms running into horizontal base section of flat gray; appears to be unsigned.
