Physical DescriptionColorless non-lead glass; blown, polished, enameled. Shallow, circular shape with everted rim and flat center; the rim polished and gilded; the surface elaborately enameled and gilded, divided into six panels with blue and gold scrollwork, topped by projecting baskets of fruit, built up in high relief (apparently using enamel, but possibly a molded composition), the fruit painted or enameled yellow and red, the baskets brown; six panels framed by pairs of rounded scrolls, each enclosing a miniature landscape; elaborate gilded foliate and scrollwork designs above and below; ribbed, bulbous gilded devices below; a circular panel at the center, with a cream-colored band divided into six arcs, each with a stylized mythical animal with curled fish tail; within that ring, a gilded disk with raised gilded ornament; the back of the plate showing an elaborate pattern in tan, white, blue, and green, with gilding; polished, flat bottom; paper label, inscribed "172".
