Physical DescriptionColorless lead glass, white sulphide; encased, cut, mirrored, stamped gilt metal. Ovoid, two-handled shape, with flat, oval top; top hinged to the base; top formed of an oval gilt metal frame with an all-over pattern of stamped rosettes, with two spirally ribbed acorn knobs and a turned tab; an oval flat glass plaque with all-over cut sharp diamonds on the back, the front polished flat; enclosing an enameled gold foil decoration of a landscape, with tree stump and tree and classical temple on a rocky outcropping, with a wide greensward in front, with a rocky outcropping in the foreground, a growing plant at the right; a bird enameled in pink and lavender tones, flying above, carrying a "paper" message inscribed "a l'amitie"; reverse enameled white to resemble a sulphide; the casket of oval plan, with bulbous sides; composed of a flared openwork band at top, with intersecting open circles framed by two bands of rosettes, with a vertical inner rim; a stamped side band of swags of flowers alternating with foliate devices, above another openwork band like that forming the flared rim, mounted on a wire frame; ten pointed oval, curving wire frames form the sides, each with a stamped circular frame of rosettes holding a circular, diamond-faceted "jewel", above a scrollwork decoration; the curving wire legs soldered to a stamped oval flat band of rosettes; the side made up of a band of rosettes, a flared band of openwork overlapping circles, and a rim of rosettes; with an inset oval mirror, with granular "silvering" on the bottom; curved wire handles on either end of the sides, with stamped openwork struts of overlapping circles and rosettes, and stamped decorations of baskets of flowers above scrolls.Provenance
