Interpretive Notes
Potpourri vases made of porcelain or faience were popular after the mid-18th century. They were filled with aromatic herbs and blooms that spread their fragrance through holes in the lid. This jar continues the tradition, but the holes are located in the open-worked bronze neck. (see George and Thomas Woodall, 92.2.10 and cameo glass in Stourbridge, 89.2.11).
