Physical DescriptionTan terra-cotta; molded. Ovoid shape, waisted neck; interlaced scroll border on the top, rounded rim; rounded panels on the neck; bulbous gadrooning on the shoulder; two pairs of handles formed of pairs of interlaced serpents; body decorated in relief in two panels, one depicting two centaurs fighting with men holding shields, with a woman at the far right; other side with a centaur grabbing a woman and child, while another centaur wrestles with a male soldier; bulbous gadrooning below; disk stem; bell-shaped foot decorated with overlapping leaves; bottom of the foot with incised script signature "F. Carder sc./1887"; a pencil inscription, script "Case/958"; two fragmentary paper labels, one printed, with "...ge / ...egr. No. 169 [ink]/Stage 23c [ink]", the other not inscribed; and another additional undecipherable incised symbol; small gummed paper label, inscribed in ink "376/35"; a bolt and nut hold the foot on the vase; bottom of the inside of the vase filled with white plaster.Provenance
