This lantern was engraved by George Franklin Lapham at the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company, between 1865 and 1875. It was made for "G. Lavery" whose name is on the shade. Lapham worked at the Sandwich firm from 1836 until the 1880's, although he served in the Army during the Civil War. He is the only Sandwich engraver who is known to have signed his work.

Physical DescriptionColorless lead glass, brass; blown, engraved, metal worked. Oval blown shade with applied ring at top and molded ring at bottom; engraved with a pattern of grapes and leaves around a wreath surrounding the name "G. Lavery" in old English lettering. Brass ventilator top with a line of punched stars and diamonds and ring handle, brass base with cylindrical collar having a line of punched stars and solder on brass "skirt" like base. (B) Bell-shaped brass kerosene burner/font which is removable with clips; wick raiser marked "E. MILLER 7 CO.PAT.JUL 21,63"; "G.F. Lapham, eng" in script at lower rim on reverse of shade.
