Interpretive Notes
This lamp is an unusual example of collaboration between Tiffany and an artist outside of his studios. Its shade is “Cypriote” glass and its ceramic base is by the French ceramist Clement Massier, who specialized in Art Nouveau–style luster wares. Although we don’t know how this collaboration came about, we do know Tiffany was aware of Massier: both participated in Samuel Bing’s first exhibition at the Salon de l’Art Nouveau in Paris in 1895, and Tiffany had examples of Massier’s work in his personal collection.
