Interpretive Notes
Flo Perkins is one of a small group of women artists who began to blow glass in the 1970s. She received her B.A. from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1974 and her M.A. in glass from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1981. Her work reflects her experience of nature as a haven from the chaos of daily life. She is inspired by the natural, sculptural forms of plants and flowers. / Best known for the series of colorful glass cacti that she has developed over the last 20 years, Perkins began in the 1990s a new series of flower forms that combined glass and metal. Initially experimenting with rebar, she moved on to bronze, steel, and iron for the creation of her large bouquets, lattices, wreaths, and swags. In Mazzo Sporgente, Perkins creates a dynamic balance between the innately colorful, fluid glass and the monochromatic, hard metal, conveying a fleeting sense of flowers waving in the wind. / This sculpture was acquired on the occasion of the Museum's 50th birthday to celebrate and acknowledge the excellent work of staff members during the extensive renovation of the Museum complex. This acquisition was selected by the staff, by vote, from a group of contemporary glass sculptures and vessels presented by Museum curators.
