Physical DescriptionClear glass with many minute bubbles and a few impurities; free- blown, enameled and gilded. Slender club-shaped body flaring to double walled foot made of same gather, pushed up bottom with very rough pontil mark; enamel decoration; on the obverse the large coat of arms, predominantly blue, white and brown-red, of the salt panners (Halloren) flanked by two large figures of men clad in short white shirt-like garments and having floral wreaths in their hair and on one arm; in the spaces between the upper barrel with suds, two pairs of tools, the left one ladle- like, the right in the form of an S-hook; on the reverse a standard bearer (predominantly in blue, white and grey) holding the large flag with the multicolored coats of arms of Brandenburg; all figures stand on a strip of grass consisting of little elevations; gilded diamond-star motifs, accompanied by white scrolls and leaf-like motifs of arms of the salt panners, the date: "1695"; the frieze is framed above by a U-shaped line and two plain lines in white, and below by a very elaborate geometrical frieze consisting of two bands; the upper one consists of spirals and stylized blossoms suspended from an arcade, alternating with vertically oriented dots and dashes; at the point where the vessel curves into the foot there is a plain white band with horizontally oriented black M-shaped motifs, white elongated dashes on the foot; below rim a gold band with a scene showing the town of Halle, including churches, houses and turrets (hardly visible).
