Interpretive Notes
This handsome vase was a wedding present in 1894 to Benjamin Murphy, Chief of Police of Jersey city, NJ. Since the silver collar is engraved with an "S" this vase may not have been new in 1894.

Physical DescriptionColorless, lead glass, silver; blown, cut, silver chased and engraved. Pear-shaped body cut all over in a complex pattern which features 5 vertical rows, each having 3 hobstars from top to bottom, with sections of hobnail, diamonds and stars in between. It is mounted with an elaborate silver rim engraved with an "S" and an "M" in script between raised flowers and stems in 5 sections. The flat circular base is cut with a multi-pointed star; stamped dolphin-like form followed by "STERLING 531" stamped on silver rim with scratched "T 142".
