Interpretive Notes
The monogram is that of Frederick III Elector of Brandenburg (1688–1713). He was the first King of Prussia (1701–1713). His daughter-in-law is commemorated in the adjacent covered goblet.
Physical DescriptionClear heavy glass; free-blown, cut and engraved. Beaker (a) almost cylindrical body with ground slightly concave base; two bands of cut ovals at rim and base, cut rings below rim and above base, frieze of broad leaves in slight relief around lower body; the obverse shows an oval concave medallion with the monogram of the Elector Frederick III of Brandenburg, flanked by putti; the reverse has the coat of arms of Brandenburg, the medallion flanked by putti, both medallions are surmounted by crowns and have flags and drums below; two dancing putti between the medallions; set-in domed cover (b) with solid pineapple-shaped finial; two broad-leaf friezes and a wavy palm-leaf frieze, accompanied by cut rings and a band of cut ovals at the bottom, finial cut to form a pineapple.
