Physical DescriptionDeep purple glass, appearing black; cast, ground and polished, engraved. Gem: oval, with flat upper surface, sloping side and flat lower surface. Engraved in intaglio on both surfaces and side. On upper surface: at right, four-legged animal facing left, standing on ground line; at left, snake with coiled body rearing up from same ground line and facing right, its head large and radiate; inscription in Greek capitals runs around edge, interrupted by rays of helmet or crown. On side: inscription in Greek capitals. On lower surface; at right, four-legged animal facing left, standing on short ground line, and, at left, four-legged creature with large beak facing right, standing on back legs on short ground line, with body vertical and front legs extended upward and outward.
