Physical DescriptionFragment of Bowl with Polo Player. Almost colorless, with brownish tinge; decorated in gold, red, white, light blue, brown, and yellow. Blown; gilded, enameled. Fragment of bowl. Bottom of wall curves down and in, and merges with plain base, which is slightly concave; pontil mark irregular (1.5 x 2 cm). Decoration, on inside only, is drawn in red and filled with color. On wall, small parts of two opposed, apparently identical motifs, bottoms of which are shaped like broad V; they are outlined in red and contain smaller blue and white Vs. Presumably, two other opposed motifs existed, but nothing survives. Floor is occupied by medallion (D. 6.6 cm) with gilded border between red outlines. Medallion is filled with horse and rider galloping from left to right; horse is shown in profile, and rider has torso facing viewer and head turned to glance sideways and slightly backward. Rider wears turban with red stripes, long-sleeved garment that was gilded and has yellow trim and red band on upper arm, and red pants; his right arm is raised to head height, and he grasps long, thin object—presumably shaft of polo mallet. Horse is white; saddlecloth has brown and yellow stripes; bridle and trappings are gilded. Background is light blue.Provenance
