Interpretive Notes
Sunlight streaming through the living room windows of the artist’s family home in northern Scotland inspired Harbour Road, Lybster. Sutherland remembers this spot with warmth, but as an adult, she experiences it at a remove. The fused glass panels re-create the spatial relationship between the living room’s corner windows and a picture frame that hangs beside them. Dimensionally flat, but rendered in a startling perspective that makes them appear to project beyond the wall, the panels reproduce the emotional detachment Sutherland feels from this once-beloved location.
Physical Description3 Fused Glass Panels, "Harbour Road, Lybster". Translucent white and black glasses, white paint; fused, painted. Three fused panels in varying transparencies of white glass offset by fused black glass perspective lines designed to represent the relationship between two windows and a picture frame in the corner of the artist's childhood living room. Panel backs are painted white.
