Physical DescriptionClear glass; free-blown and gilded, with inserted gold glass medallion, engraved. Straight-sided slightly tapering beaker with flat bottom; the top layer of the lower body of the beaker has been ground away to receive a hoop, the exterior of the base has also been copper-wheel engraved; the lower part of the body shows a band of gilded ornaments including loops alternating with leaf-like double volutes; the base medallion shows as viewed from the interior, a decoration in gold against translucent ruby red lacquer: in the center two hands clasped in a handshake and emerging from two clouds, in the background two crossed branches, above a royal crown, at the bottom two burning hearts, the one heart bearing the figure "3", the other, the letter "L" (?); this central motif is surrounded by a band of leafy volutes; the engraved decoration covers the upper part of the beaker in a narrow pattern; this pattern is divided into four parts, connected and separated from each other by blossoms, flower and leaf sprays as well as geometric volutes (Laub-und- Bandelwerk); the first motif includes a table on which is a chandelier and a book, surrounded by the inscription: "wer mich mit masse braucht, dem kan ich freud erweckeh", on the opposite side a similar table with an hour glass and another book, surrounded by the inscription: "wer aber mich misbraucht, der kompt am bettelstecken" (to the one who uses me with moderation, I will give pleasure; the one who abuses me will become poor); the two alternating sections show a lion sitting on a sort of bench and surmounted by a canopy.
