Physical DescriptionHeavy clear glass with a slight dark tinge; some wear spots, especially on the cover; crizzling; free-blown with applied and tooled decoration. (a) The bowl has slightly curved spreading walls and wide base with rough pontil mark as well as an outfolded rim; (b) the cover is dome shaped with thickened edge, and surmounted by a succession of two bulges surmounted by a triple knop finial; the applied decoration consists of vertical rigaree bands applied to the bowl and the cover, another rigaree band runs around the base of the bowl; to the edge of the bowl a free standing lace frieze has been applied consisting of crimped and cross-hatched pairs of leaves surmounted by an open work zig-zag thread; every second rigaree band on the cover ends in an outcurling leaf at the first bulge while the alternating bands run up to the finial and end in shell motifs; rigaree bands have also been applied to the two knops of the finial while the top spherical knop has four free standing leaves to form a rosette.Provenance
