Interpretive Notes
During World War II, Corning provided glass for many of the thermometers used by the US Navy, selling tubing to manufacturers of scientific instruments. This is an example of a wartime thermometer.
Physical DescriptionWWII United States Navy Type "B" Thermometer in Original Box. (a) Glass, paper, red wax, metal; assembled. Double-walled thermometer with paper inserted between walls. Inner thermometer set in place with red wax. Tip weighted with metal beads and sealed with metal tip. (bc) Original cardboard box. Printed inscription on lid: "U. S. NAVY, THERMOMETER TYPE "B' / Testrite Instrument Co., Inc. New York, N. Y. / Contract No. N140s-40671A dated 3-13-1944".
