Physical DescriptionHumpen with a Genre Scene. Clear bubbly glass with many impurities and pinkish grey tinge; wear marks at base; free-blown, enameled and gilded. Almost cylindrical body slightly tapering top and bottom, with pushed up base having rough pontil mark; applied foot ring; enamel decoration: the scene is predominantly green, yellow, pale blue and red enamel is supposed to be a satyrical comment on laziness; seated at a table is Captain Lentz, a mercenary, hiring a man carried in by another one on a little push cart; behind the table is Lentz's secretary and standard bearer; on the left there is another man crouched on the floor and hiding his face in a large flag with blue and yellow stripes through which appears the head of an ass; the inscriptions are partly difficult to decipher especially the ones which are written on little ribbons beside Captain Lentz and the new recruit; they read as follows: "haubtman Lentz mit sein Schreiber und fenich 1602" (on the right of the Captain); above the scene: "Der Lentz nimbt Knecht ann" (Lentz lives a man); above the man resting on the floor: "Der fenrich Hanns von fleis" (diligence); above the man pushing the wheel barrow: "sommer"; the man in the wheel barrow says: "Ach bester Haubtman werbt mich an: vor faulheit mag ich nicht aufstan" (Good captain, please have me as I am - because of my laziness - not able to get up); the captain says (practically undecipherable): "Lieber Pomst (?) liebenn faulen best. Der alter falst (faulst) ist mir der best"; there are four columns of inscriptions around the lower part of the vessel: "Wil komen wil komen Jr. leiben (lieben) Herren Die den lentzen zu dienen Bergerer (begehren) Jr habt Bei im (ihm) gewissen Solt (Sold).
