Interpretive Notes
The Kufic inscription on the upper wall reads: “Blessing and happiness to its owner.”
Physical DescriptionColorless. Blown; slant-cut. Bottle with egg-shaped body. Rim plain with ground top; neck cylindrical, but narrower at bottom than at top; shoulder slopes; wall curves out, down, and in, and merges with rounded base. Neck, wall, and base are covered with slant-cut ornament arranged in six continuous horizontal bands framed by either one or two continuous horizontal ribs. Upper neck has band of seven vertical oval facets and lower neck has six contiguous rectangular vertical facets. Shoulder is divided into 10 contiguous vertical facets. Upper wall has narrow band of kufic: (baraka wa surur li-sahibihi, "Blessings and happiness to its owner"). Below this is broader band containing two small, inverted heart-shaped motifs with vegetal scrolls springing symmetrically from their tops and in roughly symmetrical patterns from their bottoms. Base is cut in form of rosette with seven petals.
