Physical DescriptionBrown salt-glazed stoneware; turned, molded, enameled, gilt. Squat cylindrical shape; tapered rim; two molded bands above a rounded band with relief-molded linked scrollwork devices, enameled alternately blue or white, with red and yellow links; the side with wide band decorated with relief-molded figures of standing men (Apostles), enameled and gilt; each Apostle's name inscribed above, in black on two continuous white bands, "S. PETRVS./S. ANDREAS./S. IACOB MAIOR./S. IOHANNES./S. PHILIPVS./ S. BARTOLOMEVS." on the first band, "S. THOMAS./S. MATHEVS./S. IACB [sic] MINOR./S. SIONIS./S. IVDAS DAT(E)VS./S. MAT HIAS." on the second; a circular panel on the front, with incised framing line enameled blue, enclosing a depiction of the Agnus Dei, holding a cross-shaped staff with pennant; rounded band below the scene, with relief-molded and enameled decoration matching the band above; the sloping foot with enameled inscription in white "TRICK MICH AVS VND SCHENCK MICH EIN, DAS DV ERFRISCHT DAS HERTZE DEIN//ANNO DOMINI.1.6.6.2"; applied loop handle with relief- molded grotesque head, enameled yellow, with red-enameled hair and mustache, and blue and white "beard" with central beard band; domed pewter cover, hinged to the handle; shell-shaped thumb-piece; finial with ribbed knop, disk and top ball knop; impressed hallmark on the front, a shield divided vertically, the left side with heraldic eagle, the right with bendy (bars sloping to right); inscribed inside in script in black ink "N 918/G. CMB." and "4212"; slightly concave, partly-grazed bottom, with square paper label (the remains of a Beinecke leather collection label), impressed "EDWIN J./BEINECKE/ COLLECTION" and an indecipherable number; inscribed "617." in bright red paint; inscribed "4212" in faded brown ink; spot of red sealing wax.
