Physical DescriptionTransparent pale light purple glass; free-blown, gilded and enameled. Wide plain foot with slightly curved sides and rough pontil mark, ball knop stem flanked on each side by a spool, and surmounted by a very large bulge which supports the wide cylindrical bowl (the bulge is part of the bowl and has on its interior center a rough pontil mark); a very rich decoration covers the vessel; on the foot a pattern including three shield- like motifs enclosing a heart-shaped motif formed with a golden band, a row of white pearls and a band with red and turquoise triangles, this shield alternating with narrower shields or cartouches enclosing volute bands and having at its center a branch against a white dotted background (these are the main motifs); the knop of the stem is slightly irregularly gilded, the bulge has a band of rosettes with colored centers and accompanied by a row of pearls, this band being framed by gold lines, rows of pearls and comma-like dashes; the main scenes apparently copied from a cycle of the life of a saint in a mid-16th century Venetian style, includes three large lunettes, separated by four sided panels filling in the spaces between the lunettes and including winged sphinxes against the dotted background, the shields and the lunettes accompanied by a complicated leaf band of clothe-like nature; one lunette shows an elderly man on the right, a dead male figure covered with a blanket and lying in the center of the picture, accompanying persons on the left, background and right, large columns added an architectural unit in the background; the second lunette seems to show the same man this time in ecclesiastical garment accompanied by elderly men, apparently visiting immigrants or sailors on a boat with mast and sails;.
