Physical DescriptionFragment of Beaker. Colorless, with many very small bubbles; decorated in gold. Blown; gilded. Fragment of beaker. Rim plain, with rounded lip; upper wall (Th. 0.2 cm) is straight and tapering, and becomes vertical at bottom of fragment. Decoration on upper wall consists of single register (W. 3.7 cm), bordered at top and bottom by narrow stripe, and containing two bands of ornament. Upper band, just below border, has continuous arcade of small semicircular arcs with, at junction of each pair of arcs, solid circle with vertical line below it; fragment preserves 25 arcs, and this suggests that entire circumference of vessel had about 100 arcs. Surviving part of lower band has two separate motifs, drawn in outline only: (1) small diamond-shaped motif containing cross with sides parallel to sides of diamond; attached to outside of angles at top and bottom of diamond, small open circle, with pair of similar circles outside angles at sides of diamond; outside circles at all four angles, one short arrow; and (2) to right of (1), part of indeterminate motif with, at center, small diamond. Circumference of beaker had room for eight motifs of similar size, perhaps four of type (1) alternating with four of type (2). Beneath lower border, at top of vertical part of wall, traces of additional gilding.Provenance
