Physical DescriptionColorless glass with black pigment and gold and reddish-brown lustre; blown, rim finished at glory hole, decorated in lustre and fired pigment. Shallow bowl with wall and base 3 mm thick; rim slightly thickened and beveled; side vertical, curving in at bottom; plain flat base; pontil mark; decorated on outside of wall and on floor in gold and red lustre and black pigment; on wall: continuous band of kufic inscription in gold with black outlines with brown arabesques in field between upper and lower gold border with black outlines; on floor: central roundel containing sphinx walking toward left, her head almost full face with features and hair indicated in black and with gold halo outlined in black, her body shown in twisted perspective (front half-turned to viewer) with torso, legs and tail outlined in black and filled with gold, which has reserved colorless spots, with feet colored black and with one wing outlined in black and filled with brown; border of roundel is continuous gold band with reserved colorless spots and black outlines; outside this, concentric band of seven fishes outlined in black swimming counterclockwise around roundel, with outer border similar to border of roundel but with 24 groups of three short curving black lines projecting from outer edge.
