Physical DescriptionColorless non-lead glass; blown, engraved. Large bucket bowl with rounded base; engraved conjoined coat of arms, on the left a Saint in a cauldron, on the right a grape vine growing in the sun; an angel above, with an Episcopal mitre and staff, with flanking crossed laurel and palm fronds; on the reverse, a bunch of grapes (polished) surrounded by vines and leaves; rough pontil mark inside the bowl; tall stem composed of two discs above a solid cylinder section, three discs, hollow flattened ball knop, three discs, solid cylinder, three discs, hollow inverted baluster, disc and capstan; circular foot with folded rim and engraved foliate wreath; rough pontil mark; paper label glued on the underside of the foot, inscribed in ink "Two Cartouches/Dexter w[ith] figure of St. John the/ Evangelist thrown by the Emperor/Domitian into a cauldron of/boiling oil. (There is a Swiss Abbey/of St. Johann, near Nesslau (Appenzell)/which is probably indicated here. Sinister, the Arms of GUTH, of BASLE,/Mitre and abbatial Staff."
