Physical DescriptionColorless non-lead glass; blown, enameled. (a) Ovoid bowl; matte black enameled decoration, a scrolled panel on one side, supported by putti, with a heart-shaped inner panel, bearing a landscape with two women, one blindfolded, carrying scales, the other holding an artist's palette, brushes and a staff, with globes and other items scattered on the ground around them, and with buildings in the distance; inscribed (scratched) on the frame below "ARS und LEX die exulirer"; sprays of foliage issue from the frame, below; on the reverse side, an oval frame, supported by two armored putti, a plumed helmet above, shields at either side, enclosing an armored male figure holding a sword in one hand, a torch in the other, with a cannon, flags, cannon balls, rifles, gauntlets, etc., around him on the ground; inscribed on a ribband above "AD ARMA." and scratched on the frame below, "MARS will issund triumphirer"; foliate sprays issue from the lower scroll of the frame; rounded button inside the base of the bowl; multi-knopped stem, with thin disk on short stem at top, hollow flattened ball knop, disk on short stem, hollow flattened ball knop, disk on short stem, hollow pear-shaped knop, two rounded disks, a hollow flattened ball knop, and a flared disk at the bottom; sloping circular foot with folded rim; black enameled floral wreath on the top; cylindrical pontil wad. (b) Domed form, with folded rim and tapered brim; enameled laurel wreath on top; finial composed of two small baluster knops with short stems and flaring bases, mounted one on top of the other, one solid, one hollow; small rough pontil mark inside.
