Interpretive Notes
One of the coats of arms on this goblet belongs to the Maggi family, which was ennobled before 1703.
Physical DescriptionColorless non-lead glass; blown, cut, engraved, gilt. (a) Round funnel bowl with gilt rim and border of polished circular facets; cut ribs and rounded flutes, outlined with gilding at the base of the bowl; engraved conjoined coats of arms on the side; stem composed of a straight section above gilt turned steps, a cut melon-ribbed knop, and a waisted section with cut spiral panels; conical foot with gilt cut oval facets and ribs and rounded fluting outlined with gilding; signed in diamond point script on the foot rim "Rosbach Berlin"; rough pontil mark. (b) Domed shape with cut, tapered, inset flange; cut band of circular facets and gilt band on the side; cut oval gilt facets, rounded flutes and ribbing outlined with gilding on top; finial composed of a part-gilt cut melon-ribbed knop, above a spreading, panel-cut section, gilt at top and bottom, a flattened, cut, melon-ribbed knop and two gilt cut stepped bands and a straight section; rough pontil mark.
