Interpretive Notes
The monogram is that of Queen Sophie Dorothea (1687–1757), wife of Frederick William I of Prussia. The gilding of the goblet was a Brandenburg specialty.
Physical DescriptionCovered Goblet. Colorless and transparent dark blue non-lead glass; blown, cut, engraved, gilt. (a) Tapered bowl with gilt rim; border of engraved polished ovals; large blue oval pad with the gilt monogram "SD", framed by gilt engraving of eagles, scrolls, cornucopias, and a crowned eagle; cut rounded panels with gilt borders, nine bubbles in the base of the bowl; stem composed of gilded and faceted ball knop enclosing numerous air bubbles, with tapered, panel-faceted cusps on either side, gilt tapered section below, and a gilt faceted basal ball knop; domed foot with cut rounded panels outlined with gilding; rough pontil mark. (b) Domed shape with rounded sides and cut, tapered, inset flange; cut with rounded panels and facets, with gilt outlines; finial composed of faceted and cusped ball knop matching that on the stem of (a); gilt cylindrical section above, supporting a cut melon-ribbed, gilt finial knop; rough pontil mark.
