Interpretive NotesThe celebrated sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi was born in the United States, but he spent his early years in Japan. After studying art in New York City, he moved in 1923 to Paris, where he was an assistant to the well-known Romanian abstract sculptor Constantin Brancusi. In Paris, Noguchi met other influential sculptors interested in abstract art, such as Alberto Giacometti and Alexander Calder. In his art, Noguchi combined Western and Eastern approaches to abstraction. The design of this plate was inspired by Japanese painting.
