The De Chirico vase was sold at Stair Galleries, Hudson, NY in 2008 as is. Roth subsequently purchased the vase from a Millbrook, NY dealer on 01/05/09. The Stair Galleries is a mid-level auction house that sells mostly estate items, and sometimes some very nice things turn up from the estates, no doubt, of wealthy New Yorkers, many of whom have country homes in the Hudson Valley.
We know from the Steuben Archive at the Rakow Library that four examples of this urn were sold in the 1940s and early 1950s. One now belongs in the collection of the R.W. Norton Art Foundation & Gallery in Shreveport, LA, which was bought by Mr. Norton on 11/26/52, where it was identified as an urn. One was sold on 3/26/40 to Mrs. John P. Pratt, Glen Cove, Long Island; one was sold on 2/21/40 to Mr. Harvey S. Mudd, Beverly Hills, CA; and one was sold on 7/1953 to Mrs. Joseph Rubin, location unknown. This urn may have come from one of the three private collections.
