This glass is a puzzle. The shape is typical of the Low Countries but certain details of its construction are unusual. Could the glassmaker have been a Venetian working in the Low Countries?

Physical DescriptionColorless glass with yellow-greenish tinge, and white canes; bubbles, seeds, and some inclusions; blown, cane-work, applied. Conical bowl with furnace-opened rim, rounded to the base; joined to stem with merese, solid flattened ball knop and hollow knop with 14 ribs; attached, twisted cane with two rods of white glass, arranged in an 8-shaped loop within oval field; applied trail on sides, pincered with a waffle-patterned tool into corrugated fins, crests, and beaks. Joined with avolio to rough, thick pontil mark, which has ring-shaped groove. The end of cane has been sheared off with straight shears. The technique of making the cable thus differs from the usual winged goblets: The cable was attached to the ribbed knop and then twisted and elongated, while still on the pontil. After shearing off and forming the 8-shaped loop, a second attachment was made below the knop, shaped with the waffle-patterned tool, to form the neck of the second head. The attached trails were cast off on their lower ends. Lower avolio has glass thread wrapped and tooled around it(?). The grooves in the stem are matted.
