Physical DescriptionColorless lead glass; blown, engraved (copper wheel and diamond-point). Ovoid body; tall, waisted neck with inverted bell-shaped rim; sloping shoulders; applied loop handle; applied domed foot; elaborately and finely engraved decoration, consisting of a band of matte circles with polished centers below the rim; two bands of tiny circles and narrow horizontal rings above a band of vertical lines, bordered at the bottom by horizontal rings and a band of polished circles on a matte band, divided into narrow vertical panels by thin vertical lines, the vertical panels with engraved vertical bands of stylized foliage or tiny dots; a band of polished dots on a matte band, tiny matte dots, and horizontal rings at the base of the neck; the shoulder with a vine with round foliage or fruit in a narrow band; above a vertically ribbed band, flanked by borders of polished and matte circles; the sides with an elaborate design of overlapping vines with foliage, a large fantastic beast on the front, having a bird's body, a snake's tail, and a lion's (?) head, both legs extended, one holding a frog in the talons; a snail crawls overhead; a mouse, stork, and frog in the vines to the right, a monkey and another stork to the left; on the reverse, a snarling cat's (?) head with horns and long ears; a decorative band of dots and ribbing below the foliate band, matching that on the shoulder; engraved band of matte circles with polished centers on the side of the foot; engraved vertical band of stylized foliage on the handle, and bands of matte circles on the sides of the handle; oval panel of polished circles at the base of the handle, enclosing the monogram "SF"; polished flat foot rim; polished pontil mark.Provenance
