Physical DescriptionColorless (window glass) non-lead glass, paint, paper, wood; blown (window glass), cut from a larger sheet; painted and gilded on reverse. Flat rectangular glass sheet, with painted scene on the reverse side; consisting of a walled castle with three towers and gate; a river at the left, with another castle on the hillside at the left; row boats on the river; men with donkeys on a road leading up to the gate in the castle wall; a city and hills in the background; blue sky with clouds and birds; three sides with gilt borders, one (left side) without; found with tan paper on the edges, and backed with mottled tan cardboard (now separated from the painting by acid-free cardboard); the rectangular frame of two parts, the outer molding painted black, the inner molding gilded; two metal loops for hanging; flat, rectangular backboard (mahogany?) with paper label on the outside, inscribed in ink script "Quadro su vetro di / Francesco Zuccarelli / nato in Toscana nel 1702 / Picture on glass / by F. Zuccarelli / bourn (sic) in Tuscany 1702", the paper posted on the wood, and with two red wax seals at the sides; the edges of the board covered with cemented paper.
