Interpretive Notes
The coats of arms belong to the ruling families of the German states of Hesse and Brandenburg. They commemorate the marriage of Wilhelm VI, Langrave of Hesse-Kassel (1629-1663) and Hedwig Sophia of Brandenburg (1623-1683).
Physical DescriptionClear glass with minute bubbles and impurities and dark greenish-grey tinge; wear marks; free-blown and enameled and gilded. Almost cylindrical body, tapering upper part and bottom, pushed up base with rough pontil mark; applied foot ring; enamel decoration: on the body, in multicolored enamel, a coat of arms of the house of Hesse and Brandenburg; above the arms of Brandenburg the following inscription: "W. 6. L. Z. H. G. Z. C. D. Z. U. N. - H. S. L. Z. H. G. A. C. S. D. M. Z. B." (Wilhelm Sechste Landgraf zu Hessen, Graf zu Catzenelnobogen, Diez, Ziegenhain und Nidda - Hedwig Sophie, Landgrafin zu Hessen, geboren aus Churfurstlichem Stamm der Markgrafen zu Brandenburg); below the Hesse coat of arms, "1649"; large quartered, gilded diamonds (partly rubbed off), studded with blue beads and accompanied by pairs of white spirals and blue beads, are put in pairs between the coats of arms; above the inscription a gilded band (partly rubbed off) with a large scale pattern with blue beads at the crossings; white dashes and dots on the foot ring.
