Physical DescriptionComparatively heavy clear glass with many minute bubbles and impurities and a slight grey tinge; wear marks at base; free- blown and enameled. Beaker flaring to wide rim and having a very slight flare at bottom, pushed up base with rough pontil mark, applied foot ring; enamel decoration: the decoration on the vessel is executed in white enamel heightened in green, from a very light to a very dark shade; it shows an elegantly dressed couple, the gentleman, a gardener, in a wig, and holding a stick and a garden tool in his left hand while he touches the woman (his wife) by her waist; to the left a group of trees, to the right a large garden represented in inaccurate perspective, the gardens being divided in depth by a lane in front of which is an elaborate fountain topped by a nude figure from which streams of water pour; to the right an elaborate stepped garden house; the inscription above the garden and on the reverse reads: "Last uns Spatziren gehn, Im Garten auff und nieder, als dan So Sietzen wir zusammen wieder Nieder. Die Garttner sind wohl gemuth. Sie trincken wen Sie dursten thutt. Es Geh Unnsz allen wohl. 1697." (Let us walk in the garden up and down then sit down again. The gardeners are happy they drink when they are thirsty. May we all be all right.) in the empty spaces a few star-like and blossom-like motifs; the scene is framed at bottom by three white and one blue band, and on top by a blue band accompanied by two white bands and two rows of white dots, green zig zag motifs are put on the band; white dashes on the foot ring.
