Physical DescriptionWineglass with Portrait of General Wittgenstein. Clear glass, probably lead; free-blown, applied white enamel and transfer medallion, gilded and cut. Long cylindrical bowl with recessed band at top; octagonal stem flaring at bottom to form circular step on square foot with beveled edges and ground and polished pontil mark; on bowl, applied opaque white oval medallion with sepia transfer depicting profile bust of Count Louis Wittgenstein in uniform within a wreath having a spray of laurel leaves and berries at left and oak leaves and acorns at right; inscription in Russian script -- "He was the defender of Petropolis" -- three words along inside of wreath at left and one word at right; one Russian word (probably the artist's signature) along outside of wreath at right; graduated cut panels below medallion and, on rest of sides, cut band of flutes between flat panels; medallion outlined in gold, rim band at top gilded inside and out.Provenance
