Physical DescriptionColorless glass; cast or pressed, cut, ground and acid-polished. Solid block: rhombic horizontal cross-section; flat top with beveled cylindrical socket for candle and beveled edges; vertical side and flat bottom, also with beveled edges; decorated with V-shaped groove, 1.3 cm wide, which begins shortly below top and descends in continuous spiral composed of ten straight sections to shortly above bottom, so that two sides have three parallel grooves and two sides have two; underside has etched mark or sand-blasted mark: "RIEDEL" (retrograde); attached to top, maker's printed label in black on white paper: in cartouche, "VORSIGHT! / Kerze nicht vollständig / hinunterbrennen! / ATTENTION! / Take care that candles do / not burn into holder!"; attached to side, maker's printed label in white on black paper: in cartouche, "Handmade in Austria / RIEDEL / since 1756 / lead crystal / over 24% PbO / 1/89".Provenance
