Physical DescriptionComparatively heavy extremely bubbly greenish glass with many impurities; wear marks at base; free-blown, enameled and gilded. Almost cylindrical body with bulge at upper third, and very high pushed up base with extremely rough pontil mark, applied foot ring; enamel decoration: on the body, in multicolored enamel, the Diess Family: on the obverse a richly dressed couple, the woman holding in her left hand a flower while the man holds in his right a white gilded goblet with double knop; both are flanking a burning heart pierced by two arrows and a saw (similar to Siebmacher, I, part VII, Pl. 155); to the right of the man his son, also very richly dressed; on the reverse a flower star: a yellow blossom at center with yellow and green leaves radiating from the center, around this central motif; apple-like fruits and blue corn-like and yellow egg-plant like fruits as well as leaves arranged in a star-like formation; the figures stand on a grass strip with large grass tufts as well as upright flower stalks with multicolored blossoms; the empty spaces are filled with gilded, quartered diamonds (partly rubbed off) studded with blue and red beads and with radiating branches and spirals and dots, as well as with blossom-like and star-like motifs; there are also two calligraphic wavy spiral motifs to the left of the woman and the right of the man as well as to the left of the flower and fruit motif; the inscription in the upper section reads: "Allen denen so mich kennen, gebe Gott was sie mir gonnen. Gonnen sie mir nicht viel so geschicht doch was Gott haben will. Anno Domini 1664. Casten diesz" (name of gentleman); (To all who know me may God give what they favor me. However, what they don't favor me very much still everything will be the way God wishes); "All mein thun und anfang stehet allein in Gottes hand."
