Physical DescriptionClear glass with minute bubbles and slight greenish-grey tinge; free-blown, enameled and gilded. (a) Slender, slightly concave body with pushed up base having no pontil mark, applied foot ring; enamel decoration: a broad frieze shows, in multicolored enamel, with predominantly deep amethyst and white colors, in full-length a father and his four sons, with their hands resting at their belts, and standing on a strip of grass where there are lily-of-the-valley stalks, above them are their names on white ribbons; in the center the father: "Hans Nether Senior"; and from left to right: "Andreas, Benedictus, Nicolaus, Hironimus Nether"; on the reverse an armorial shield with two axes indicating the profession of Mr. Nether as a butcher; between the heads of the family members gilded quartered diamonds studded with red, blue, and white beads and framed by white and red beads and half moons; a similar more elaborate motif above the armorial shield, a white star-like motif below; above the Nether Family an inscription: "Allen denen so uns kennen, gebe Gott was sie uns gonnen, es gonn uns einer wenig oder viel, so weisz doch gott das beste Ziel, An Gottes Segen ist alles gelegen. Hildburghausen, ANNO 1654"; (All who know us may God give what they grant us; may it be small or large what they grant us, God will know the best, God's blessing is most important.); below rim a gilded band (partly rubbed off) accompanied by two red lines, two white beaded lines as well as a U-shaped band and a scroll band; at bottom a complicated ornamental frieze consisting of groups of red, yellow and blue lines framing a band of H-shaped ornaments alternating with red and yellow rosettes; below a fleur-de-lis band; white dashes on the foot ring; cover of very clear glass, flanged and domed with a solid finial resting on a bulge; the cover has a multicolored wreath of flowers and branches, accompanied by a gilded band between red lines, on the flange gilded diamonds alternating with groups ofProvenance
