Physical DescriptionTransparent pale green very heavy glass with bubbles and impurities; free-blown, cold painted and gilded. a) Tall cylindrical body with pushed up bases having rough pontil mark, the broadened base tooled to have a wavy outline, the underside shows piercings from a tool; b) flanged, domed cover with large double bulge top crowned by a finial consisting of a succession of knops decreasing in diameter towards the top. On the body a hunting scene, in dull multicolored paint, with a white net winding diagonally across the body on both sides four hunters with guns are blowing a trumpet as well as dogs, deer, fox, boar, birds, hare, etc., all standing or running on grass tufts, and mostly turned to the left; on the obverse, in multicolored enamel, the large coat of arms of the Elector of Saxony surrounded by a wreath, on top of the wreath sits a squirrel, flanking the shield is the date "1652", underneath is an inscription: "Ihr edle Jager allzumahl/Seit mir willkomm in disem Thal/Diana eure Gottinn hier/Versamblt hat allerley thier/ Wer Sie liebt trinkt mich auch dabey/ Erschall ein frolich Jagdgeschrey" (Hunters you are always welcome in this valley, Diana you goddess here has assembled quite a lot of game; who loves her drinks out of me may happy hunting cry be intimated.); in the empty spaces gold and white star-like ornaments and blossoms, below rim a gilded band accompanied by two rows of beads, on the foot ring groups of three white dashes; on the cover similar larger gilded and white star and blossom motifs, groups of three dashes on the flange and on the bulges as well as on the finials, rings of white beads adjoined to the bulges and the finials.
