Interpretive Notes
The painter Jean Hugo was the great-grandson of the famous French poet and novelist Victor Hugo. He was one of a circle of avant-garde artists and writers in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s. It included the Surrealists Jean Cocteau, René Char, and Paul Eluard, and Hugo’s good friend Henri Matisse.
Physical DescriptionVase with Centaur and Unicorn. From the Steuben series "Twenty-Seven Artists in Crystal." Colorless glass; blown, applied, engraved. Large footed vase has wide rounded body, opens to flared rim, with opposing applied handles on lower body. Body is decorated with engraved figures of a centaur holding a spear and unicorn beside a tree.
