Interpretive Notes
“Aventurine” derives its sparkling effect from copper crystals dissolved in the glass mix. Its composition makes it difficult to blow. Until the late 1800s, it was sculpted from solid blocks, like this example.

Physical DescriptionCruet Set. Cut, ground, and polished aventurine glass, silver-gilt metal mounts. The cruet set comprises a platter in aventurine glass with three circular shallow recesses. On the platter rests a silver-gilt frame with foliate scrolls. Within it sit three small vessels: two smaller, fluted pots and a taller, central vessel formed as a fluted bottle. All three are mounted with silver-gilt detachable lids with spiral gadrooning and are surmounted by a finial.
