Interpretive Notes
Desk accessories were popular and could be purchased individually or as a matching set. This set’s costly retail price of $30 underscores its luxury status. Tiffany offered other versions that were more “affordable” at $10. By comparison the 1906 Sears, Roebuck and Co. mail-order catalogue advertised a “Common Sense Inkwell” for just $0.07.
Physical Description"Poppy" Inkstand. Favrile glass tesserae; orange and blue pressed glass; bronze. Three-piece inkstand with a bronze framework featuring three sections of poppy foliage extending upwards from the base to the rim. Variegated Favrile glass tesserae inlaid within each section. The inkstand supports a bright orange pressed glass inkwell with a flared and scalloped rim in the shape of a poppy flower. The inkwell cap, shaped like the pistil of the poppy flower, is made of pressed Favrile blue glass.
