According to Nils Viebahn, the snuff box comes from a private collection in Bremen, Germany. The owner inherited it from her father, Carl Ernst (died 1998), a renowned jeweler in Wiesbaden who collected snuffboxes. Most of Ernst’s collection reportedly was acquired during the 1970s-1980s. Ernst’s father and grandfather also collected snuffboxes, so the van Selow box could have been in the family for much longer. The two stickers on the interior of the box, labeled “3010/27” and “281” are most likely 20th century inventory or auction labels.
