Interpretive Notes
Colorful enamels were popular on ceramics too. The town of Creussen in the German state of Bavaria was famous for its high-quality stoneware.
Physical DescriptionBrown salt-glazed stoneware; turned, molded, enameled. Squat, cylindrical shape; tapered rim, rounded molding below; enameled thin white ring above a rounded blue and yellow guilloche band with red dots, above a wide band with molded, enameled hunting scenes, with men and dogs chasing foxes on one side, and men and dogs attacking a bear and foxes on the other side; a circular panel on the front, outlined in yellow, with a dark grey boar and fruiting tree, blue background, and green ground; inscribed "16/59" above; band of white dots below the hunting scenes; two bands of white dashes interspersed with sets of three yellow dots on either side of a yellow and blue guilloche band with red dots, and a white guilloche band with alternating green and red dots near the bottom; applied loop handle with molded grotesque head, enameled yellow, with red moustache and blue and white foliage with green mid-rib; slightly domed pewter cover, hinged to the handle, with scrolled and beaded thumb-piece; raised ring at the center of the cover; slightly concave, partly-glazed base; inscribed "37." in black ink.
