Physical DescriptionFragment of Cup. Transparent royal blue glass, bubbly with some opaque red inclusions, opaque yellow, opaque white, opaque red, translucent green, blue, and opaque pink glasses or pigments suspended in colorless glass and applied to surface as decoration; molded or blown, wheel-cut and "enameled" in high relief. Thickened rounded rim, almost straight-sided cylindrical form, wall thickens before bending into rounded base; exterior decorated with pairs of lathe-cut lines, placed immediately below rim, a second 5 mm below the first, a third decorates the center of the body, two more emphasize the lower portion of the body; between the register formed by the upper and lower lines and over the center line is preserved a decorative motif of applied fused glasses; a naked figure modeled in opaque pink is bent at the waist to his right and extends his right arm, holding a small white object in his hand, he has a white pointed beard and little tufts of white hair on his head, wide blue eyes, with a paunch and sagging breasts, a greenish blue cloak is tied over his shoulders and covers a small wedge of his left hip, otherwise, the cloak forms a backdrop for the figure, he appears to be dancing behind, peering from, or trapped within a pomegranate or lemon tree, the green limbed tree entwines the figure and terminates in trilobed brick red flowers and a single yellow round fruit; there may have been two, three or four of these 4.5 cm. medallions on the original vessel.
