Physical DescriptionMosaic Plaque with Lion Attacking Man. Canes of opaque white, opaque red, opaque yellow, translucent turquoise and translucent deep yellow-green, appearing black, all in a matrix of opaque medium deep blue glass, pitted, dull sides, one face with much brown decomposition on figures, the other repolished recently; mosaic glass or millefiori technique. Thick slice of a roughly rectangular cane preserving the design of a yellow lion outlined and delineated with thin yellow-green lines and splashes of red in face advances to the left on a captive with black skin and light-yellow hair. The captive is tied in conventional Egyptian style with arms bound to a turquoise post behind him; he sits with left leg forward and right leg folded under him with white boots and a red and white kilt which is suspended from white straps that run over the shoulders; the lion places his right paw on the shoulder of the captive, his left paw on the knee, his head and the face of the captive touch.Provenance
