Physical DescriptionColorless, transparent red, dark amethyst (appearing black), non-lead soda glass; hot-worked glass rods (colorless cased in color), cooled rods are placed in plaster molds and fired, ground, carved, brushed with silicone oil, assembled. Vertical stepped sculpture in two parts, smaller section is centered on base, both sections are situated with open end at top and both sections of top and bottom surfaces ground flat; (a) base section, rectangular block formed of vertical squared bars of alternating red and black staggered in placement so that alternating bars recede, irregular "fins" of colorless (tinted to varying degrees with red) overflow and extend from various points of exterior, they protrude horizontally from top edge and from approximately 1/4 distance from base edge, at corners and scattered other locations the overflowing fins are perpendicular; (b) top section, also rectangular in shape but smaller than base in width and depth while taller in height, same format of bars and similar overflow protrusions (here along base edge rather than top edge), horizontal row of overflow is 1/2 distance from base; solid bases of both sections comprised of short sections of the bars with some reading as colorless squares; (b) white woven tape on inside with Japanese calligraphy in black ink; noted by asst. registrar but no during cataloging: Makoto Fujiwara and more Japanese calligraphy at top right.
