Physical DescriptionWineglass. Colorless (heavily crizzled) non-lead glass; blown, engraved. (a) Large round-funnel bowl, engraved decoration of a lion chasing a bee, with a ribband overhead inscribed "Non nimium Securg[us]"; on the reverse, an eagle holding a man's severed head in its talons and beak, and a ribband inscribed "Nosce te Ipsum"; continuous ground line below, with scattered growing plants; tall stem composed of two rounded and one angular merese above a conical true baluster knop; two rounded mereses, a flattened ball knop, a rounded merese, a conical inverted baluster, and two rounded mereses; large circular, sloping foot; rough pontil mark. (b) Domed shape with folded ledge and tapered brim; engraved continuous landscape, with a man and horse plowing a field, a sheepherder with dog and ten sheep, and trees; engraved inscription above, "FAC TUA et FIDE DEO"; engraved inscription on the brmi "Nichtes Wirt Soklein gesponnen Es Kompt Entlich an der Sonnen"; conical finial mounted on three mereses; rough pontil mark inside.Provenance
